SNOW NEEDS TO BE COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM SIDEWALKS
The Williamston Police Department has been receiving calls from residents about a large number of sidewalks not being cleaned down to the cement, causing a public safety issue. It appears that residents have attempted to clean their sidewalks, but because of people walking on them, along with the melting and freezing, it becomes hard to remove all the snow and ice from the sidewalk. City Ordinance states, in part, that all snow and ice shall be removed within 24 hours after it has ceased if the accumulation is less than 4 inches and all such snow and ice shall be removed within 48 hours after the snow has ceased if the accumulation is more than 4 inches. If the snow and ice has not been removed after it has ceased accumulating, all such snow and ice will be removed at the owner's expense. See City Ordinance, Part II Code of Ordinance, Chapter 50, Article II Snow Removal. Click here to view ordinance.
Our main concern is for the safety of our residents and their children. Sidewalks that are not kept clean cause our residents to walk in the street to keep out of the snow. This is dangerous. We are asking residents to take responsibility, as a homeowner, and keep your sidewalks clean.
POLICE ASK DRIVERS TO USE CAUTION
The new three way stop signs at the intersection of E Church St & Highland St have accomplished their goal. For the most part, motorists are happy to see something has been done to make it safer for our school children when crossing that busy intersection. However, more and more we are seeing a disturbing trend starting to develop. Stop signed intersections are not the same as a Yield intersection. A lot of drivers are not coming to a complete stop at the stop signs which causes backups in traffic, as well as traffic safety issues. The law states in general that a vehicle must come to a complete stop at a signed intersection. Large numbers of vehicles are rolling through the stop sign, never coming to a complete stop. Just applying your brakes and slowing down does not constitute a complete stop. We are hoping that motorists will make a more concerted effort to obey the law. If we continue to see this happening, we will step up enforcement at that intersection. Please drive safely and give yourself a little more time during these winter months. |
